Judges: Confidence in God

Hebrews 4:16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Psalm 118:8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people.

Romans 10:11 As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.”

  • Deborah – 4th Judge of Israel
  • 1 of 4 women identified as prophetess.
  • Cycle: Rebellion, retribution, repentance, and restoration.
  • Oppressing Nation Caananites
  • Length = 20 years
  • Years of peace – 40 years …Judges 4 tells the story….Judges 5 is a song of praise!

Hosea 8:7 For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.

Israel worshiping false gods, again

Judges 4:2 So the Lord turned them over to King Jabin of Hazor, a Canaanite king. The commander of his army was Sisera.

What is sin? Whatever we think, say, or do, that makes God sad and breaks his law.

Other Gods?  money, pleasure, porno, drugs, alcohol, cults, sex

Psalm 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord!

Woodshed – life circumstances – Bring us to our senses.

No fear of the Lord….did not take God seriously.

Israel Cried out to God

Judges 4:3; 5:8 Sisera, who had 900 iron chariots, ruthlessly oppressed the Israelites for twenty years. Then the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help. When Israel chose new gods, war erupted at the city gates. Yet not a shield or spear could be seen among forty thousand warriors in Israel!

Why should God help? They did not deserve it! God’s love, he was the only one to help

Just as today for us…only God can save us, because of our sin.

Sisera – multitude of warriors, far superior to Israel and 900 chariots.

Israel – spiritually weak and militarily weak

Deborah Chosen by God

Judges 4:4-5 Deborah, the wife of Lappidoth, was a prophet who was judging Israel at that time. She would sit under the Palm of Deborah, between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites would go to her for judgment.

A judge was not a king…they were deliverers, arbiters, and administrators. They provided periods of rest and stability for portions of Israel.

God’s Battle Plan

Judges 4:6-7 One day she sent for Barak … She said to him, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, commands you: Call out 10,000 warriors from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun at Mount Tabor. And I will call out Sisera, commander of Jabin’s army, along with his chariots and warriors, to the Kishon River. There I will give you victory over him.”

Trust God

Judges 4:8-9 Barak told her, “I will go, but only if you go with me.” “Very well,” she replied, “I will go with you. But you will receive no honor in this venture, for the Lord’s victory over Sisera will be at the hands of a woman.” So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh.

*Did not trust God wholly. Deborah come with me!

Imminent Danger

Judges 4:12-13 When Sisera was told that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor, he called for all 900 of his iron chariots and all of his warriors.

What danger are you facing? Hebrews 11

Deborah listened carefully to God’s instructions and had total confidence in God’s ability to give victory, even in the face of death.

God sent a storm…chariots got stuck in the mud.

God’s Presence

Judges 4:14 Then Deborah said to Barak, “Get ready! This is the day the Lord will give you victory over Sisera, for the Lord is marching ahead of you.” So Barak led his 10,000 warriors down the slopes of Mount Tabor into battle.

*Peace of God. Great faith…thanking God for victory that has not happened yet!

Isaiah 41:10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

Nahum 1:7 The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him.

God’s Miraculous Provision

Judges 4:15-16 When Barak attacked, the Lord threw Sisera and all his chariots and warriors into a panic. Sisera leaped down from his chariot and escaped on foot. Then Barak chased the chariots and the enemy army… Not a single one was left alive.

Judges 4:18-22 Jael….tent peg

God used Deborah as a brave leader

Judges 4:23 So on that day Israel saw God defeat Jabin, the Canaanite king. And from that time on Israel became stronger and stronger against King Jabin until they finally destroyed him.

My Decision Today:

-Be like Deborah!

I Timothy 4:12b Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.

Ephesians 5:1 Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.
