Ephesians: In Christ

Our Calling in Christ

Identity In Christ

Ephesians 1:3-4 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.

When we receive Christ  as Savior …United with Christ….every spiritual blessing…

First blessing – We have been chosen to be holy….. Two aspects of salvation

The “God side” – he chooses.

The “human side” – each person must believe in Jesus to be saved.

Both are true…Paul is stressing the God side in this chapter.

The forwhosoever wills are the elect. Romans 10:13

Second blessing – 5 we are adopted and have full status of children.

Third blessing – 6 we are accepted in the beloved.

Fourth blessing –  7 redeemed…he has purchased our freedom.

Fifth blessing – 8 the forgiveness of sins..other side of the coin…debt cancelled.

Sixth blessing – We have an inheritance awaiting us

Sealed with the Holy Spirit. Down payment…Fruit of the Spirit!

Grace in Christ

Ephesians 2:3-4 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else. But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much,

Grace – Receiving what we do not deserve.

Mercy – Not receiving what we do deserve.

Charis – grace = undeserved acceptance and love received from God

Peace in Christ

Ephesians 2:17-18 He brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and peace to the Jews who were near. Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us.

Peace between Jew and Gentile…no second class Christians

We all have peace with God…we all have the peace of Christ!

Our Walk in Christ

Ephesians 4:5-6 There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all.

One Lord – Jesus Christ

One Faith – the Word of God points people to Jesus who can be trusted for eternal life.

One baptism – baptism by the Spirit at the moment of salvation. Rom 6:1-14; I Cor 12;3

One God and Father of all!

Ephesians 4:11-12 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.

Apostles-no apostles today…work of an apostle/take the Gospel

Prophets-Canon of Scripture is complete…gift of prophecy, forth tell the word not fore tell.

Evangelists- Billly Graham. All believers are to do the work of an evangelist.

Pastor – Teacher. – one gift

Equip the Saints to do the work of the ministry.

Ephesians 4:17-19 With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused. Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him. They have no sense of shame.

Believers are not to live like unbelievers!

Rom 12:1-2 Don’t be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Ephesians 5:1-2 Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.

Love, forgive, be Holy

Ephesians 5:31-32 As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.” This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one.

Broken Together by Casting Crowns

Ephesians 6:1-2 Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise:

Children obey…honor your parents

Stand Firm

Ephesians 6:13, 18 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

Belt -truth, breastplate – righteousness, shoes – peace,

Shield – faith, Helmet – salvation, sword – Spirit.
