Life Skills: How to deal with Anger / 9.16.18

Anger is God given energy intended to help us solve problems.

Anger can become sinful when:

Motivated by pride
James 1:20 Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.

It distorts God’s purposes
1 Corinthians 10:31 So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

It is allowed to linger
Ephesians 4:26-27 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.”Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

How to handle anger biblically:

By seeing God in the trial
James 1:2-4 Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.  Romans 8:28-29

Genesis 50:20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.

By making room for God’s wrath

Genesis 50:19 But Joseph replied, “Don’t be afraid of me. Am I God, that I can punish you?
Romans 12:19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord.

By returning good for evil
Romans 12:21 Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

By communicating to solve the problem
Be honest and speak
Ephesians 4:15, 25 Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good. So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body.

Stay current
Ephesians 4:27 Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

Attack the problem, not the person
Ephesians 4:29, 31 Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.
Proverbs 15:1 If you listen to constructive criticism, you will be at home among the wise.

Act, don’t react
Ephesians 4:32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

My Decision Today
People who conceal their sins will not prosper,
but if they confess and turn from them,
they will receive mercy.
Proverbs 28:13
