NEHEMIAH: Fixing Broken “Stuff”.01/21/2018

Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.”  How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”   James 4:13-15

HOW TO EXPAND YOUR INFLUENCE & IMPACT

  • See the Need

Hanani, one of my brothers, came to visit me with some other men who had just arrived from Judah. I asked them about the Jews who had returned there from captivity and about how things were going in Jerusalem.  They said to me, “Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.” Nehemiah 1:2-3

  • Go to the Lord FIRST

When I heard this, I sat down and wept. In fact, for days I mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of heaven. Then I said, O Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps his covenant of unfailing love with those who love him and obey his commands, listen to my prayer! Nehemiah 1:4-6A

  • Take Personal Responsibility

Look down and see me praying night and day for your people Israel. I confess that we have sinned against you. Yes, even my own family and I have sinned! We have sinned terribly by not obeying the commands, decrees, and regulations that you gave us through your servant Moses.  Nehemiah 1:6B-7

  • Stand on the Promises of God

Please remember what you told your servant Moses: ‘If you are unfaithful to me, I will scatter you among the nations. But if you return to me and obey my commands and live by them, then even if you are exiled to the ends of the earth,[a] I will bring you back to the place I have chosen for my name to be honored.’  The people you rescued by your great power and strong hand are your servants.”  Nehemiah 1:8-10

  • Specific Prayer Request

“Oh Lord, please hear my prayer!  Listen to the prayers of those of us who delight in honoring you.  Please grant me success today by making the king favorable to me.  Put it into his heart to be kind to me.”  In those days I was the king’s cup-bearer.   Nehemiah 1:11

What is broken down in or around your life?

How often do you pour out your heart to God?

How often do you give God a specific request to answer?

Something to think about…..

Why did God choose Nehemiah?

Leadership is influence.

Proverbs 28:2  When the country is in chaos, everybody has a plan to fix it – But it takes a leader of real understanding to straighten things out.  (The Message)

Leadership can be learned.

Philippians 4:9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me – everything you heard from me and saw me doing.  Then the God of peace will be with you.

Mark 3:14  He appointed twelve that they should be with him and he should send them out.

“Dependability is much more important than ability.”  Towns

WHERE AM I?

Am I sensitive to the needs around me?

Can I be depended upon?

Am I available to God, to be used in any way that He wants to use me?
