Advent: From Bethlehem to Jerusalem
¨ Jesus is brought to the Temple
Luke 2:22-23 Then it was time for their purification offering, as required by the law of Moses after the birth of a child; so his parents took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. The law of the Lord says, “If a woman’s first child is a boy, he must be dedicated to the Lord.”
¨ Prophecy of Simeon
Luke 2:33-35 Jesus’ parents were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother, “This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.”
¨ Prophecy of Anna
Luke 2:38 She came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph, and she began praising God. She talked about the child to everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue Jerusalem.
Why the virgin birth incarnation?
“In the OT we have man made in the image of God and in the NT we see God made in the image of man”. “The miracle of the virgin birth was not the actual birth, but the conception of Christ’s earthly body”. Willmington
4 Reasons for the incarnation:
- To reconcile man to God
1 Timothy 2:5-6 There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity – the man Christ Jesus. He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. This is the message God gave to the world at just the right time.
- To destroy the devil and his works
Hebrews 2:14 Because God’s children are human beings – made of flesh and blood – the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death.
- To heal the brokenhearted
Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free
4. To give life-abundant life
John 10:10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
Romans 5:1 Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
