Entering God’s Rest
The importance of entering God’s rest
Deuteronomy 12:8-10 Your pattern of worship will change. Today all of you are doing as you please, because you have not yet arrived at the place of rest, the land the Lord your God is giving you as your special possession. But you will soon cross the Jordan River and live in the land the Lord your God is giving you. When he gives you rest from all your enemies and you’re living safely in the land
2nd of 5 Warnings in Hebrews: #2 Don’t DOUBT God’s Word
The example of unfaithfulness: ¨ Israel’s sin in the wilderness
Hebrews 3:9-10 There your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw my miracles for forty years. So I was angry with them, and I said, ‘Their hearts always turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.’
¨ Majority Report
Numbers 13:32c-33 “The land we traveled through and explored will devour anyone who goes to live there. All the people we saw were huge. We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that’s what they thought, too!”
¨ Israel’s sentence in the wilderness
Hebrews 3:11, 16-19 So in my anger I took an oath: ‘They will never enter my place of rest.’” And who was it who rebelled against God, even though they heard his voice? Wasn’t it the people Moses led out of Egypt? And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it the people who sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness? And to whom was God speaking when he took an oath that they would never enter his rest? Wasn’t it the people who disobeyed him? So we see that because of their unbelief they were not able to enter his rest.
The Encouragement to Faithfulness: ¨ When you hear God’s Word, obey God’s Word
Hebrews 3:7-8, 15 That is why the Holy Spirit says, “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled, when they tested me in the wilderness. Remember what it says: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.”
¨ Minority Report
Numbers 14:7b-9 “The land we traveled through and explored is a wonderful land! And if the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us safely into that land and give it to us. It is a rich land flowing with milk and honey. Do not rebel against the Lord, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land. They are only helpless prey to us! They have no protection, but the Lord is with us! Don’t be afraid of them!”
¨ Encourage one another daily
Hebrews 3:12-14 Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ.
Proverbs 4:23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
The Promise of God
Hebrews 4:9-11 So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.
