How to Forgive…

Principle One: Take An Account

Matthew 18:23, 24 …a king decided to bring his accounts up to date with servants who had borrowed money from him. 24 …one of his debtors owed him millions of dollars.

Principle Two: A Debt Only Jesus Can Repay

Matthew 18:25 He couldn’t pay…

Joel 2:25-26 (God speaking) “I will (restore) repay you for the years the locusts have eaten…26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are full, and you will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders for you; never again will my people be shamed.”

Principle Three: Anger Must Be Released

Matthew 18:25 …so his master ordered that he be sold – along with his wife, his children, and everything he owned – to pay the debt.

Principle Four: Forgiveness Is Not Dependent on the Offender

Matthew 18:26 But the man fell down before his master and begged him, “Please, be patient with me, and I will pay it all.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins to him, he is faithful & just to forgive us & to cleanse us from every wrong.

Principle Five: Forgiveness Requires Compassion

Matthew 18:27 Then his master was filled with pity for him…

Romans 2:1 When you say they are wicked & should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you do these very same things.

Principle Six: Forgiveness Offers Emotional Release to the Forgiver

Matthew 18:27-28 The king released him and forgave his debt. 28 “But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant who owed him a few thousand dollars. He grabbed him by the throat and demanded instant payment.

Principle Seven: Forgiveness Is Not the Same as Reconciliation

Romans 12:17-18 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. 18 Do your part to live in peace with everyone, as much as possible.

Romans 12:19 Don’t insist on getting even; that’s not for you to do. “I’ll do the judging,” Says God. “I’ll take care of it.”
